The Sun says ‘Sensational’

Metro shouts ‘It’s a Blast’

The Evening Standard says “Footloose kicks up a high octane storm”

The stage musical Footloose is based on the exhilarating cinema sensation starring Kevin Bacon. The film took the world by storm with its youthful spirit, dazzling dance and electrifying music.

Footloose is the story of city boy Ren who moves to a small town where dancing is banned. All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town on its feet.

We were amazed to discover Footloose is based on a true story. In 1979 the small town of Elmore City, Oklahoma faced a community crisis. The seniors of Elmore High School wanted to plan a senior prom, but dances were against the law thanks to a not-forgotten ordinance from the late 1800s that forbade dancing within the city limits. A storm of controversy pitted the high school students against city council members led by the local minister, who declared dancing a tool of the devil! This tempest in a teapot that rocked the rural community rocked and rolled the rest of world too, when just five years later the smash hit movie Footloose, based on their story, set the movie-goers dancing…

Released in 1984, the film Footloose, starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer and Sarah Jessica Parker, captured the heart of America and made it beat to the music of a solid-gold soundtrack. Let's Hear it for the Boy, Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, and the title song Footloose went from gold to platinum to multi-platinum in record time.

In 1998 the stage musical Footloose first played the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Later that year it opened on Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theatre and the following year, the musical went on a hugely successful tour of the US. Like the film, the stage version tells the story of a free-spirited boy, who reminds a local minister that it is no sin to be young. With music that speaks to three generations, he takes an uptight town and sets it “Footloose”.

Dean Pitchford, who wrote the story, screenplay, and lyrics for the film, was also the key creative force behind Footloose the musical. Dean collaborated with a variety of composers, including Kenny Loggins and Eric Carmen, to write the nine songs featured in the film. The score for the musical features hit songs from the movie as well as 9 new songs written with Tom Snow, who was responsible for Let's Hear It for the Boy.

This production of Footloose first toured the UK in 2004. A clever new set, stylish costumes and slick dance routines by the West End choreographer Karen Bruce, transform this classic tale of teenage angst into a captivating stage show. Performed by a sexy and energetic young British cast, Footloose the musical has the winning formula audiences love!
