Set in a northern town during the miners’ strike of 1984/5, the show follows Billy’s journey from boxing ring to ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that unites his family, inspires his community and changes his life forever. Brought to life by the award-winning creative team behind the film and featuring iconic music by Elton John, Billy Elliot is an extraordinary theatrical experience that has captivated audiences around the world.
Billy Elliot The Musical is returning to London in 2027, bringing one of the most heartwarming and uplifting British musicals of the modern era back to the West End. The acclaimed production will play at the Adelphi Theatre from 12 February to 31 July 2027, marking an exciting new chapter for a show that has captivated audiences around the world.
With music by Elton John and a book and lyrics by Lee Hall, Billy Elliot combines heartfelt storytelling with electrifying choreography and unforgettable songs. Since its West End premiere in 2005, the musical has become one of Britain’s most beloved theatre successes, celebrated for its emotional depth and extraordinary young performers in the title role.
Set in a mining town in County Durham during the 1984–85 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot tells the story of a young boy who unexpectedly discovers a passion for ballet. Raised in a community where boxing seems like the more acceptable path, Billy must navigate family expectations, financial hardship, and social pressure as he begins to pursue dance.
As Billy’s talent becomes clear, the people around him are forced to confront their own fears and assumptions about masculinity, class, and opportunity. The musical balances humour, political tension and emotional moments, building into a story about courage, identity and the transformative power of following your passion.
Part of what makes Billy Elliot so enduring is the way it blends an intimate personal story with a wider portrait of Britain during a turbulent period in history. Against the backdrop of the miners’ strike, the musical explores family loyalty, community resilience and the challenges of breaking away from expectations.
The production is also famous for the remarkable young performers who take on the title role, which demands exceptional acting, singing and dance ability. Over the years, many talented actors have stepped into Billy’s shoes, including a young Tom Holland, who performed in the West End production between 2008 and 2010 before going on to global film stardom.
Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot, which was also written by Lee Hall. The stage adaptation premiered at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London’s West End in 2005 and quickly became a critical and commercial success.
Directed by Stephen Daldry with choreography by Peter Darling, the production won multiple Olivier Awards and later achieved similar success on Broadway, where it earned ten Tony Awards. The musical has since been staged in theatres around the world, becoming one of the defining British musicals of the 21st century.
The score by Elton John blends rock, pop and musical theatre styles to capture both the energy and emotion of Billy’s journey. From rousing ensemble numbers to powerful solo moments, the songs help bring the characters and community of the story vividly to life.
